Week 1

An "Aha" moment I had over the past week was the importance of spelling and writing. I was looking over the power point and could. not believe all of the misspelled signs that were included. I particularly loved the Groj Sale sign. I took a picture and sent it in my family group chat. As a young student, I loved spelling. I will always remember winning the Spelling Bee in second grade. Recently in my education courses at Trinity, I had to write a paper and research the importance of grammar and how grammar is taught today. Grammar is not necessarily a subject in todays classrooms, rather it is incorporated through reading and writing activities. Spelling Bees have been taken out of classrooms today. The research I found was that teachers should not incorporate Spelling Bees because it can make students become anxious and afraid to participate because all eyes our on them during a spelling bee. I disagree with research and I believe that spelling bees are important and can help students overcome fears of talking out loud and I do believe they become better spellers.

In second grade we would have a spelling bee each month. Every month I was so close to winning but I just couldn't win. I would go home and practice. I would make my family ask me words to spell out loud so that I could finally win. I eventually did win and it provided me with so much confidence. It was allowed to gain a love and respect for good and proper spelling. Today we have different teaching styles. I think it is great to have differentiation but I think it is important to have the old style learning as well. Today we have placed so much emphasis on making every kid a winner which in some cases is not always going to be the case. I think it is important for children to learn to lose. In life, there are going to be moments and times when you don't win, and that is okay. We have to teach children to have good sportsmanship and allow kids to practice at a task that will make them better and allow them to win.

  1. I agree that spelling and writing is so important! Things can be completely misunderstood when misspelled. I also agree that it is true that we teach children that everyone is a winner nowadays, but that creates no competition. Children don't learn how to mentally prepare themselves for rejection if they aren't willing to lose a few times. Good thoughts! :)
